LUBOMYR-MELNYK

Ukrainian pianist Lubomyr Melnyk comes to the Elgar Room following his 2013 release, his first in the UK, Corollaries.

Lubomyr Melnyk is a true innovator in contemporary music. Classically trained and greatly affected by the minimalist movement of the early 1970s, he developed his own unique language for the piano, Continuous Piano Music, which follows the principle of maintaining a continuous, unbroken stream of sound.

Melnyk has shown a remarkable devotion to the instrument, striving to discover new ways of composing in the continuous mode. His virtuoso piano technique forms overtones that blend, collide or even create new melodies in rare moments, and thereby shape the composition beyond its original form.

“My music is so different from any other piano music that has happened before that I feel I can safely say that people have no idea what’s happening or what it’s like to play Continuous music.

It’s like turning your body into a jet or flying like a bird. Your flesh alters substance continuously and your mind is in hyper-speed as the world whirls around you like a hurricane with the piano as its vortex, yet you remain perfectly still. ” – Lyubomyr Melnyk on the interview to “Fifteen” Questions.
