Debate in the Parliament: MH17 and the International Tribunal: Putting the Truth on Record

On Monday, 9th March, court hearings will begin in The Netherlands in an attempt to determine criminal responsibility for the destruction of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17. MH17 was destroyed over in eastern Ukraine on 17 July 2014, killing all 298 people on board. On the basis of the investigation conducted by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT), Dutch prosecutors are prosecuting four suspects – three Russians, and one Ukrainian – for bringing down the airplane. International arrest warrants have been issued for all four.

Michael Bociurkiw is familiar to television viewers around the world through his on-air commentary for such outlets as BBC World Television, CNN, Bloomberg and Al Jazeera. As an independent Global Affairs Analyst, he contributes regularly to CNN Opinion and speaks on geopolitics worldwide. Most recently he has been commenting widely on the crashes of MH17 in Ukraine and PS752 in Iran – as well as on the coronavirus spread.

A two-time TEDx speaker, Michael tackles such issues as diplomacy, conflict, the situation In Ukraine, disinformation and manipulation, the business of humanitarian aid, technology, and climate change. As a journalist, Michael has reported for a variety of leading outlets – including MSNBC, the South China Morning Post, the Los Angeles Times, the Globe and MailForbesAsia Times and Newsweek. He learned the craft of journalism at Carleton University in Ottawa, and at Columbia University in New York City. Michael has served as global spokesperson for UNICEF and for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine. As a member of the first international team of observers to reach the crash site of MH17 in July, 2014, Michael acted as the on-location,  de facto spokesperson for the catastrophe. He has written and spoken widely on the crash and on the safety and criminal investigations.

Currently Michael is completing work on his first non-fiction book on smartphone and social media addiction called ‘Digital Crack’. He was also the editor of a biographical book on Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.


Eliot Higgins is the founder of Bellingcat, an online open source investigative collective launched in July 2014, which since its launch has made public a number of major discoveries about the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. This included tracking the Buk missile launcher that downed MH17 back to its base at the 53rd Air Defense Brigade near Kursk, Russia, identifying multiple individuals involved in the downing of the plane, including senior members of the Russain military and Russian intelligence services, and much more over dozens of articles. Bellingcat has won multiple awards thanks to its work on the MH17 investigation, including for Bellingcat’s 6 part podcast documentary on MH17. Bellingcat currently operates as a charity in the Netherlands.


Roland Oliphant is The Daily Telegraph’s Moscow correspondent. He has lived and worked in the former Soviet Union for ten years, spending much of that time reporting politics, business, and wildlife in Vladimir Putin’s Russia. He reported on the crisis in Ukraine from the outbreak of the Maidan protests in 2013, and witnessed the overthrow of Viktor Yanukovyuch, the annexation of Crimea, and the war in eastern Ukraine first hand.
