More About the Event
KCL Films for Ukraine is a short season of films by and about Ukraine, co-presented by KCL Departments of Digital Humanities and Film Studies and organized by Dr. Gabriele Salciute Civiliene and Prof. Chris Berry.
We aim to present a screening every week throughout May 2022 to deepen our understanding of cinema, culture, and history of Ukraine, and to fundraise for charities nominated by the filmmakers.
In My Unknown Solider, when a Ukrainian film student based in Prague Anna Kryvenko decides to find out more about the relative cut out of all her family photo albums, she opens up the complexity of Eastern European history and its impact on ordinary people. Clues lead her back into the times when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia still existed and she discovers she was not the first member of her family to visit Prague. She discovers how the euphoric and horrific history of the Prague Spring in 1968 is part of her Ukrainian heritage.
