More About the Event

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (Tini zabutykh predkiv, 1965, 97 minutes, English subtitles), is the film that brought Armenian director Sergei Paradjanov fame on the international film festival circuit for its sumptuous colour, elaborate camerawork, and inventiveness. During the Soviet era, most of the films made at the Dovzhenko studios in Kyiv were Russian-language works, but Paradjanov shot in Ukrainian working with a local cast, crew and artists. Shot in the Carpathian mountains in southwestern Ukraine, the film’s folk legend narrative of love blocked destroyed by ethnic division resonates today.

This screening is made possible by the Dovzhenko Film Centre in Kyiv. The Russian invasion has disrupted funding, making it not only impossible for the Centre to cover basic costs such as utilities or to continue its regular activities, but also to pay its staff salaries. Therefore, all donations from this screening will go to support the Dovzhenko Film Centre.
