Academic programme for Ukrainian students “Leadership, Education and Development” (LEAD) is proud to present a panel discussion “Shaping Editorial Policies in the World’s Leading Media”. The distinguished speakers from renowned media channels will explain how international coverage is formed and how editorial agendas are constructed. They will also address questions which are topical for Ukrainian society, such as:
– How is Ukraine relevant to the international news coverage? What are newsmakers looking for when covering news from Ukraine? How are the decisions made as to what makes it to the news on TV, online and in print?
– How do medial channels interact with government and public institutions in the countries like Ukraine? How does this interaction compare to the modus operandi in the UK? What could the authorities in these countries improve in their cooperation with international media and why?
The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session and a small reception.

Biographies
Solomiya Borshosh is an expert in strategies and evaluation in the sphere of international relations, sustainable development and civil society. Having experience in financial audit and consulting, in 2013 Borshosh together with a team of respected Ukrainian journalists founded a famous independent media organisation Hromadske.
She lead Hromadske’s finance and administration department for 2 years before engaging into other influential civil society projects, mainly within the Reanimation Package of Reforms, a coalition for reforms in Ukraine. Currently Borshosh is pursuing a post-graduate degree at the War Studies Department, King’s College London.
Ryan Chilcote is a London-based reporter for Bloomberg Television. Chilcote regularly reports on companies, commodities, economics and politics throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He has interviewed a number of the world’s top political and business leaders, including conducting the first international television interview with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev after the terror attacks in Moscow’s airport in January 2011. Chilcote, who specializes in long-form storytelling and interviews, most recently presented the 12-part series, “Ryan’s Russia,” a unique take on the world’s largest country.
Prior to joining Bloomberg Television in 2007, Chilcote was a correspondent at CNN International, covering the former Soviet Union and the Middle East.
Chilcote graduated from the University of California and has studied at Moscow State University and Yaroslavl State University.
Thomas Evans is Vice President and Bureau Chief at CNN International’s London operation. Evans is responsible for newsgathering across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, managing the Newsdesk and all London-based crews, producers and reporters – including three senior international correspondents. Before being appointed to this position in 2014 he was the Senior Director of Coverage for EMEA.
Overseeing fifteen CNN International bureaux, Evans has led CNN’s coverage of some of the major news events of the past few years including the Syrian civil war, the 2012 London Olympics, the ongoing political and social unrest in the wake of the Arab Spring revolutions, the Paris and Brussels attacks, the terrorist attacks in Tunisia and the ongoing migrant and refugee crisis in Europe.
Prior to his assignment to London, Evans was Senior International Producer at CNN’s Baghdad operation. Together with correspondent Michael Ware he was part of the network’s primary reporting team in Iraq. Before that Evans produced one of CNN’s top-rated prime time news programmes, ‘Anderson Cooper 360’, covering major news events including Hurricane Katrina and the 7/7 bombings in London.
Before joining the network, Evans studied for Master’s degree in International Politics at London’s School for Oriental and African Studies.
Kira Fomenko is a Broadcast Journalist at BBC News in London and a freelancer for the Ukrainian Service at Euronews, which is based in Lyon, France. Fomenko has been in journalism for more than 25 years. She is a multilingual journalist, one of four who started the BBC Ukrainian Service in 1992. Later she worked for the BBC Russian Service, Radio 4 Today programme, BBC World Service News and Current affairs.
Fomenko has started as a reporter and producer for the BBC Ukrainian with audiences reaching 3.5mln listeners. Later she worked as presenter, editor and planning editor at the BBC Ukrainian and Russian Service, and also as a producer of the BBC World Service radio. Fomenko graduated from Taras Shevchenko University in Kyiv, Ukraine.
Tom Giles is Head of Current Affairs at ITV. He joined the broadcaster in 2015 to take on responsibilities commissioning current affairs strands including Exposure, Tonight, On Assignment and The Agenda, presented by Tom Bradby.
Prior to this, Giles was the editor of the current affairs programme Panorama at BBC. His Panorama credits include a film on Military Reaction Force in Northern Ireland, Saving Syria’s Children and Fifa’s Dirty Secrets, controversially broadcast three days before the football governing body’s vote on the staging of the 2018 World Cup. Panorama also investigated its sister BBC2 news programme, Newsnight, at the height of the Jimmy Savile scandal over its decision not to broadcast its Savile report. Giles joined BBC in 1991, becoming deputy editor of Panorama in 2008 and editor in 2010.
Leadership Education And Development (LEAD) Programme is an academic project organised by a team of volunteers from Young City Club, an arm of London-based non-profit organisation Ukrainian-British City Club (UBCC). Founded in 2014, LEAD aims to develop and support talented Ukrainian students who are keen to drive positive changes in their native country by implementing social initiatives or pursuing public sector careers. In the framework of the Programme, twelve participants spend two weeks in London gaining exposure to and insight into the professional environment, work ethics and corporate culture of the UK’s public and private sector institutions. Through attendance of topical presentations, participation in workshops, case studies and group projects, participants hone their communication, organisation and political skills, and explore concepts of transparency, compliance, and public governance. LEAD endeavours to motivate young Ukrainians to learn from the best Western practices and to use this knowledge to reform systems, institutions and values in their native Ukraine.
