Oleh Turiy, Ph.D., Vice Rector for Program Development at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in Lviv is a guest lecturer at the Ukrainian Institute. He will kick off the autumn season with his lecture about the forceful ban imposed on the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church by the Soviet authorities after WW2 and will highlight the mechanisms deployed by authorities to suppress one of the most powerful institutions of supporting the identity in Western Ukraine. The arrest and exile of Cardinal Josyp Slipy, the future founder of UCU and the leader of the church, marked the onset of large-scale harassment and violence against the Greek Catholic clergy and believers. The church went into hiding which lasted for over 40 years.
The talk will be moderated by Marina Pesenti, Director of the Ukrainian Institute and will be followed by a Q&A and a wine reception.
About the speaker
Oleh Turiy, Ph.D., Vice Rector for Program Development dedicated his entire academic career to the history of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and has been chairing Department of Church History at the Ukrainian Catholic University for many years. Dr Turiy was also seconded to a number of Western Universities – in Canada, Germany and Austria.
