More About the Event
THE CHARITY: MEET HELP UKRAINIAN PEOPLE
Since the beginning of the war, Help Ukrainian People, has been transporting food relief into towns in areas that have had their supply chain cut off, meaning the bigger aid agencies aren’t able to reach them. The charity sources and purchases low stock items such as basic food and medicines before sorting them into aid relief packages of three sizes, based on family size. These packs are then driven by car into areas that are inaccessible by any other method and given to the families who need them.
THE FOOD: MEET THE CHEFS
Rafel Sammut:
Bringing the idea and energy for this event is Rafel Sammut. After spending three years working in top restaurants in Piedmont, Tuscany, and Sicily, Rafel trained at the Alma Le Scuola Internazionale Di Cucina Italiana. On his return to Malta he opened the Pulled Meat Company to three sites. One of which became his now Michelin listed restaurant Briju, another, what he is probably best known for in Malta, the Victory Kitchen. When he had to shut Briju because of the pandemic, Rafel lasted a week before reopening it to cater for those who were struggling. This has become permanent premises for this purpose and supported 30,000 families with 165,000 meals.
Jonathan Brincat:
Award-winning and Michelin Starred Chef Jonathan Brincat, also known as “Noni”, is the founder and co-owner of the restaurant with the same name. After gaining valuable experience in different roles at the kitchens of five-star luxury and gastronomic establishments in Malta Jonathan moved to London to work under Michelin Starred chef Gary Hollihead at the Corinthia London.Upon coming back again to Malta, it wasn’t long until he pursued his dream to open his own place in the heart of Valletta. Noni was among one of the first three restaurants on the island to ever be awarded the coveted Michelin star.
Tyrone Mizzi:
Tyrone Mizzi has been the Head Chef of Michelin star Bahia for nearly six years. His personal motto is to respect the product and bring the best out of it in a creative way. Looking at the smiles and the pleasure of guests is one of the things that makes Tyrone most proud. Bahia is a contemporary Mediterranean restaurant situated inside the Corinthia Palace Hotel, in Balzan, Malta. Named after the orange that is key to the people of the area – the Bahia orange.
THE WINE: MEET THE WINE ESTATE
Ta’ Betta Wine Estates: Malta through a glass of fine wine
Ta’ Betta is Malta’s tribute to the legacy and winemaking style of Giacomo Tachis. Ta’ Betta produces circa 25,000 bottles per annum:
- Philippe Villiers: a robust Syrah-Cabernet Franc blend inspired by Philippe Villiers de l’Isle Adam, the warrior Grandmaster who took over Malta in 1530.
- Antonio Manoel: an opulent Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon blend inspired by Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, a benevolent and sophisticated Portuguese Grandmaster.
- Jean Parisot: a tenacious oak-fermented Chardonnay inspired by Grandmaster Jean Parisot de Valette who defended Malta in the Great Siege of 1565.
