The Society’s formal Thursday evening debates, which have been taking place since 1823 and remain the jewel in the crown of the Oxford Union, were founded on an ideal of the Freedom of Speech when religion and politics were off-limits within the University. Harold Macmillan called the Oxford Union “the last bastion of free speech in the Western world”.
Vitaliy Klitschko will join the debate at the Oxford Union on the 28th of April. Known as ‘Dr Ironfist’, Vitaliy Klitschko’s incredible height, reach and win record have cemented his position as one of the world’s best boxers, with an 87.23% knockout rate. Following his retirement from the professional sport, he has become active in Ukrainian politics, playing an instrumental role in the 2014 Ukrainian revolution. A powerful advocate of the European Union, he is currently Mayor of Kyiv.
