Left Bank Cinema presents a rare Ukrainian documentary with live music, part of the Yorkshire Silent Film festival.

Filmed in the coal-rich Donbas area of Eastern Ukraine, Dziga Vertov’s  avant-garde black and white film glorifies the Communist illusion, recording numerous actions from Stalin’s first Five Year Plan (1928 – 1932) in the USSR. These include the creation of huge collective farms, the rapid growth of heavy industry and the phenomenon of ‘shock workers’ pitted against each other for increased productivity.  Leeds and Bradford based musicians Elizabeth and Golden Meat  have created a new score for the film that responds to the idea of the acceleration of everyday life under mechanisation.

This event is part of the Yorkshire Silent Film festival, a celebration of silent film all across Yorkshire taking place throughout July. For more details go to www.yorkshiresilentfilm.com
