AUGB
This year marks the 70th Anniversary since the formation of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB), which is the largest representative body for Ukrainians and those of Ukrainian descent in the UK and which exists to develop, promote and support the interests of the Ukrainian community in the UK. Since its formation on 19-20 January 1946, the AUGB has made regular representations to the UK Government on various issues and has organised and sponsored numerous events and publications.
It currently has 34 Branches throughout the country – the majority of these having their own community premises for the furtherance of the Association’s objects. It also has three Sections -the Shevchenko Library and Archive in London (founded in 1947), the Organisation of Ukrainian Women (founded in 1948), and the Association of Ukrainian Teachers (founded in 1955), which oversees eight Saturday/Sunday Ukrainian schools in Great Britain.
The AUGB’s Head Office in London is located in the Notting Hill Gate area and incorporates the Shevchenko and Library and Archive, a gift shop and an Art Gallery (founded in 2010). Since 1945 the Association has published a Ukrainian language (now bilingual) newspaper, the Ukrainian Thought.
The AUGB is a founding member of the Ukrainian World Congress, is non-political and supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and democratic development towards full membership of the European Union.
We are grateful to all who founded and tirelessly developed, supported, worked for and with the AUGB from its very first day to the present. On our 70th anniversary, we wish all of our members many years of good health and continued dedicated service to our community. Long live the AUGB!
