Darren Baker Gallery and Ukrainian Art Gallery are pleased to announce the exhibition of contemporary Ukrainian art featuring the paintings of Taia Galagan (Tatiana Gershuni), Petro Lebedynets and Alla Aleksieieva, who are acknowledged among the top 100 Ukrainian artists.

10931722_357462957769730_1275320411631564255_nTaia Galagan announced herself on the Ukrainian art scene at the beginning of the 1990s and is now working with a variety of media. Her recent series of paintings are truly a cultural phenomenon and contain elements of 3D pictures known as ‘anaglyphs’ as an experiment with the technical and visual boundaries of painting as a medium. The artist’s ‘Double Portrait’ series evolved from her reflection on a genre of self-portraiture, its modern iconography and its meaning and place in contemporary art. It is focused on the top figures of modern art for whom self-portraiture was an important part of individual art practice, and served as a conceptual base for the unique personal artistic styles and legacy. Each portrait consists of two superimposed visual layers which are clearly seen through 3D glasses. Based on the original self-portraits, they present new visual and conceptual readings of the portrayed.

“For me, the traditional 2D illusion of 3D space is not the final solution to create a dialogue with a viewer,” Taia says “I am interested in something that could be encoded and seen in between painted layers.”

Alla Aleksieieva
and Petro Lebedynets are both bright representatives of Ukrainian modern abstract art. They consider colours as a main element of painting and also as a metaphor for human perception of the world. They aim to translate their feelings and impressions from the surrounding world onto canvas. The flashes of light and colour are associated with the energy and tension of an abstract space. “The energy the artist puts into the painting, creates the image” – Petro Lebedynets is convinced. The works of Alla Aleksieieva are a dialogue between forms and colours. They are delicate and influenced by the harmony of the female beginning and maturity of thought.

This exhibition is a chance to see some of the best examples of Ukrainian contemporary art, we are warmly welcoming art professionals and fans to get in touch with Ukrainian artists and enjoy their works.
