Tymur Melnyk was born in Kiev into a musical family. When he was six years old he started learning violin from his mother, the Ukrainian violin virtuoso and teacher Hanna Melnyk. He was only fourteen when he was accepted into the class given by Michael Frischenschlager at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he graduated in 2009 with distinction and with an honorary prize from the Ministry of Culture. Other important influences have come from master classes he has taken with Pavel Vernikov, Vladimir Spivakov, Zakhar Bron, Evgenia Tchougaeva, and Ivry Gitlis. Melnyk has won numerous competitions: in 2007, out of 800 participants, he took the Grand Prix at the Osaka International Music Competition in Japan; in 2009 he garnered second prize as well as the audience prize at the Brahms Competition in Pörtschach in 2009; and in 2010 he received a special prize at the Fritz Kreisler Competition in Vienna. Even since then Melnyk, who became an Austrian citizen in 2008, has concertized as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, Canada, Japan, Russia, and China. He plays in a violin duo with the Russian violinist Ekaterina Frolova. His portrait CD Tymur, which includes works by such composers as Sarasate, de Falla, Massenet, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, and Kreisler, was released in 2013 on the German label Querstand. Melnyk is moreover in demand as a teacher: he teaches at the Prayner Conservatory for Music and Dramatic Art in Vienna and gives international master classes. He additionally serves on the selection committee for competitions in Slovenia, Italy, and Serbia. Tymur Melnyk plays a violin built by Vincenzo Ventapane in 1756, which he has been loaned by the Austrian National Bank.
