This panel discussion, due to take place in the House of Lords on March 17th will discuss recent developments in Ukraine and Russia. It is organized by The Project for Democratic Union (PDU), a political think-tank which makes the case for a full political union of the Eurozone.

One year ago Russia annexed Crimea in what seemed to be the high-point in the Ukraine crisis of that spring. With hindsight it became clear that this was only the beginning of the woes that Ukraine had to face since then. This panel discussion will take stock of the developments in the country and its neighbourhood since the similar event one year ago.

We will take stock of development in the country, in Russia, as well as Ukraine’s neighbours to the West. Has Europe’s reaction been united and strong enough, or is the present situation part of Europe’s foreign policy inertia and division? What impact has the deepening of the crisis had on the EU’s most affected states, such as the Baltic Republics and Poland? How has the murder of Boris Nemtsov changed domestic dynamics in Russia? Finally, what steps can be taken to resolve or at least defuse the present crisis.

Speakers:

Tony Brenton

Sir Tony Brenton is a former British diplomat who, amongst many other placements throughout his career, served as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to Russia from 2004-2008. He is currently a fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge.

Rory Finnin

Dr. Rory Finnin is a senior lecturer in Ukrainian Studies at the University of Cambridge. He is an expert on national identity in Ukraine. He holds a PhD from Columbia University.

Sarah Lain

Sarah Lain is a research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute focusing on Russia and the former Soviet Union. She has extensive knowledge of the fight against fraud, bribery and corruption in the region stemming from previous professional experience at KPMG and Control Risks.

Olesya Khromeychuk

Dr. Olesya Khromeychuk is a lecturer in Ukrainian Studies. Her research focuses on the role of women in guerrilla violence in the country, particularly in the context of the Second World War.
