The members of East Warsaw ensemble have many years visited the village of Podserednieye in south Russia, researching and learning the local musical style. The experience of learning songs from the most talented village singers had created special relationship between the ensemble and the villagers. It has also had a great impact on the local society, where traditional singing was almost forgotten. This has resulted in a CD album “Laweczka” (“The Bench”), which contains both field recording of some of the most ancient repertoire, as well as the ensemble studio session.
Sophisticated polyphonies, improvisation, and joy from making music – “playing” the songs, as people there used to say – these are the main features of this unique style. A great introduction to the concert will be a screening of a documentary “From Podserednieye with Love”– a story of the exceptional cultural cross-over, filmed by a talented young director Tomasz Knittel. Also, the ensemble will present some of the most unique Polish traditional folk repertoire: ritual chants, such as spring, harvest and Christmas wishing songs, as well as lyrical and epic repertoire from Ukraine.
Members of the group: Justyna Piernik, Joanna Górska, Ewa Grochowska, Anna Jakowska, Jagna Knittel, Taras Shumeyko, Cezary Szymański, Monika Walenko-Ili-Tsang.
