Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (Ukrainian: Тіні забутих предків, Tini zabutykh predkiv), also called Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors, Shadows of Our Ancestors, or Wild Horses of Fire – is a 1965 film by the legendary filmmaker Sergei Parajanov based on the classic book by Ukrainian writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky.
“(Paradjanov’s) Greatest Work …full of visual surprises and fearless leaps in style” Edward Guthman, San Francisco Chronicle
The film was Parajanov’s first major work and earned him international acclaim for its rich use of costume and color. The film also features a detailed portrayal of Ukrainian Hutsul culture, showing Carpathian environment, family rituals, the beauty of Hutsul traditions, music, costumes, and dialect.
The film celebrates its 50th anniversary. It will be presented by Larisa Kadochnikova starring in it.
Larisa Kadochnikova’s excellent acting in the above movie contributed to its success. It has been rated as one of the most vivid and gratifying films, totally off the track from unorthodox cinema, ever produced in the Soviet Union. The storyline revolves around two separated lovers caught in a family feud. The tragic scenes the lovers go through, has been poignantly recreated. The film created a stir worldwide by its bold direction, brilliant cinematography, and an outstanding musical score. Sergei Parajanov, the director gives an impressionistic treatment of a Carpathian legend.
