Book presentation by Khrystyna Beregovska, art expert from Lviv, Ukraine.
This book introduces the pinnacle of the religious art created by the Canadian-Ukrainian artist William Kurelek. The series “The Passion of Christ” is comprised of 160 paintings, which illustrate verse for verse the “Suffering, Death, and Resurrection” of Christ, as described in the Gospel According to Matthew. The book is divided into two parts – text and illustration. The text presents a brief biography, describes his artistic study and training, discusses the lead-up to the creation of the series, and provides a professional review. The book also includes reviews that discuss the importance and uniqueness of this series, including a commentary by William Kurelek himself. This is the first publication about William Kurelek in Ukraine. The book is published in four languages, for a wide audience.
William Kurelek, (March 3, 1927 – November 3, 1977) was a Ukrainian-Canadian artist and writer. His work was influenced by his childhood on the prairies, his Ukrainian-Canadian roots, his struggles with mental illness, and his conversion to Roman Catholicism. His father, Dmytro Kurelek, was born in Boriwtsi, Bukovyna. Mary Huculak, his mother, was born in Canada, and received her elementary education in a local rural school. Her family had come with the first wave of Ukrainian immigration to Canada and was also from Boriwtsi.
