Bili Khmary (White Clouds, 1968) is an example of a body of work known collectively as the school of Ukrainian poetic cinema. The film deals with the collectivization of Ukrainian land in the 1930s, as it is recollected in the 1960s. The film has received scant critical attention to date and is going to be screened for the first time with English subtitles. Guest speaker: Dr JJ Gurga, author of ‘Echoes of the Past: Ukrainian Poetic Cinema and the Experiential Ethnographic Mode’.
