On November 21st, 2013, protesters gathered outside the government headquarters of Kiev and started to chant. “Glory to the heroes,” they shouted. This was the refrain for the movement, which lasted over the coldest months of winter. Shot entirely from the first person perspective of the protester, the film documents the frenzied organising and chaos of a social movement. An angry populace took to the streets when preparations for Ukraine’s entry to the EU were suddenly suspended. During the early days of the protest, the statue of Lenin was toppled over and its head lopped off. In a perverse contrast, a group of youths eagerly posed with the head while an old man clung onto the bronze body. Caught in the height of political discontent, the three filmmakers (Techynskyi, Solodunov, Stoykov) show how difficult it is to stand one’s ground, and how quickly things can slip into unfettered violence.
