January Workshop: The Sick Man of Europe? Ukraine, Health and Social Policy

WHEN

22 January 2015 6:00pm – 8:00pm

WHERE

UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies – 16 Taviton Street, WC1H0BW

While Western Europeans are enjoying longer and healthier lives than ever in the continent’s history, some of the former Soviet Republics have been contending with collapsing healthcare systems, destabilising military conflicts, alcoholism and high smoking rates. This workshop will trace the developments in health and social policy in Ukraine and the post-socialist space in the last 25 years. Our speakers will tackle some of the issues surrounding this theme including: attempts at reforming the post-Communist health system; fluctuations of life expectancy in Eastern Europe; the role of smoking and alcohol; the economics of addiction; the problem of internally displaced persons in post-conflict areas.

Chair:

Richard Mole – Senior Lecturer in Political Sociology; UCL SSEES

Speakers:

  • Adrianna Murphy: Research Fellow; London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
  • Diana Quirmbach: LSE Fellow in Health Economics/Health Policy; London School of Economics
  • Erica Richardson: Senior Researcher; European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies
  • Maureen Seguin: Doctoral Researcher; London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

The event will be followed by a wine reception.
