Mariana Sadovska and Abraham Brody team up in a double bill bringing together their backgrounds of Ukrainian and Lithuanian folk-singing traditions, using voices, violin, harmonium, loop station, shruti box, and other instruments to weave their own unique magical sound worlds.
At Richmix, Dash Arts and the Nest Collective present Mariana and Abraham performing separately as well as together. This performance serves as their initial foray into a duo-collaboration on their shared roots in the Carpathian Mountains in both Ukraine and Poland. The two artists plan to travel to Ukraine and Poland this summer on a journey to collect Lemky folksongs and look for stories, magic, and inspiration in the Carpathian Highlands.
Mariana Sadovska
Inspired by the traditional music of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia, her career has taken her around the world and she has gained critical acclaim for her transcendent voice, captivating performances and soulful connection to her audience. Born in Lviv, Ukraine, Mariana Sadovska trained as a classical pianist at Lviv’s National Music Academy, before forging a career that dances between theatre and experimental / improvised music. She has collaborated with some exceptional artists including Anthony Coleman, Michael Alpert, Frank London and the Kronos Quartet and performed on stages across the world including Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the UK, Ukraine, Armenia, Afghanistan, Turkey, Israel and the US.
Abraham Brody
From a background that encompasses classically-trained violin, folk-singing, and performance art (including collaboration with renowned Marina Abramović), Abraham Brody brings us into the rich and earthy world of his Lithuanian and Ukrainian roots. He creates innovative compositions and arrangements based on the ancient traditions of Lithuania–reinventing and reworking Rye-reaping chants, Midsummer songs, and rain invocations, often using loop pedals and other effects to spin an enticing, contemporary style sound-world. The combination of violin, loop pedals, jew’s harp, and other traditional instruments are drawn together by Abraham’s powerful voice, in a performance which brings us from bustle of city life back to our ancient roots, through the dreamy melodies of Lithuania and Ukraine.
