Maidan is a stunning cinematic portrait of the 2013-14 public uprising in Kyiv, one the most significant events in the history of twenty-first century Europe. It chronicles a tumultuous sweep of events, from peaceful rallies of hundreds of thousands of citizens to bloody street battles between protestors and riot police. Director Sergei Loznitsa transcends party politics to explore the nature of the uprising as a social, cultural and philosophical phenomenon. He invigorates classical filmmaking style with documentary urgency.
