Thirtythree Thirtythree, the team behind London’s acclaimed St John Sessions, are pleased to announce The Labyrinths series, an international showcase in the best in contemporary sound and art from across the globe. The Labyrinths series is formed of a trilogy of international live music events taking place in Oct/Nov 2015 across Beirut, Cairo and London.
First off, Lubomyr Melnyk & Kamilya Jubran at St John at Hackney, London.
Lubomyr Melnyk is a Ukrainian composer and pianist who has pioneered ‘Continuous Piano Music’. Classically trained and greatly affected by the minimalist movement in the early 1970s, he has developed his own unique language for the piano, named after the principle of maintaining a continuous, unbroken stream of sound.
The rapid sequences, coupled with Melnyk’s awe-inspiring ability of playing up to 19 notes per second with each hand simultaneously create a tapestry of sound that transcends sonic waves into a very tangible, physical experience. Having spent much of his artistic life in obscurity, Lubomyr Melnyk’s work was recently rediscovered by a whole new generation of music lovers, offering the piano virtuoso a well-deserved renaissance with world-wide tours.
Kamilya Jubran, singer and oud player, and Sarah Murcia, bassist and composer, have known for over 15 years and have had the opportunity of successful artistic collaborations. They met in 1998 in the tutelary Palestinian training “Sabreen” whose Kamilya Jubran was the main voice, and have since stopped making music together.
“Nhaoul” is the first project resulting from a common language, the result of a profound exchange about their respective musical interests. A self-titled debut album was released in 2013 in Crusaders agreements.
In the prospect of creating a new directory, Habka, deepening their writing and their relationship to improvisation, they will surround three new strings: Régis Huby (violin), Guillaume Roy (viola), Atsushi Sakai (cello) all three members of Ixi quartet, a welded group of virtuoso improvisers.
James Blackshaw performs celestial and spirit-lifting guitar-led compositions. Meditative in quality, cinematic in scope, his music spirals gracefully across complex patterns, motifs and harmonics. He made his name as a 12-string acoustic guitarist, and his relationship with the instrument is near perfect. With an extensive back catalogue to his name on labels like Young God Records, Tompkins Square and Important, he has developed a unique playing style that takes Takoma school finger-picking into an entirely new place. Swirling overtones, cascading notes and a thousand points of light cascade from his guitar and create ever-shifting textures that bear the influence of contemporary classical composition, post-rock dynamics and invisible soundtracks as much as the American folk guitar tradition.
