Ukrainian among other East European languages is of great interest for UCL students as they explore the impact and culture trail of these languages in the context of British history.

When Shirley Bassey sings Goldfinger she nods to the Hungarian architect of the Trellic Tower. The famous long view of London’s Bankside and Shakespeare’s Globe? Etched in 1647 by a Bohemian. Is there Ukrainian Cossack gold in the Bank of England?  Only the Bank of England knows…Who transformed the Covent Garden Opera Company into the Royal Opera? A Hungarian. Whether East Europeans contribute to, or only benefit from, British society is an ongoing polemic today.

The impact of migrants is a complex matter. Be at the ready for a quiz with a difference as we explore the eight virtual walking tours (Bulgarian, Czech/Slovak, Finnish, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Serbian/Croatian, Ukrainian) through the linguistic, artistic, professional, and creative traces that East Europeans have left behind in London.

East European Language Trails marks the UCL School of Slavonic & East European Studies’ (SSEES) Centenary in 2015, and it is a collaborative website-building project between teachers, students, and the East European communities of London.
