Devastating Deep House from Ukraine: DJ and producer Vakula’s track titles ‘Deep Deep Down’, ‘T H E O Son’ and ‘Gospel Keyboards’ alone would tell you plenty about his approach to House music. He has mined further and more thoroughly into classic US house tropes than anyone in recent memory. Vakula differs from the usual European aping of Detroit and Chicago in two key ways, however. As part of the Lightbox nights series, exhibiting some of the world’s most renowned and exciting bas music artists every Friday at Lightbox, South london record label and party-starters Church bring Ukraine’s greatest export Vakula to the Lightbox. On October 16th joined by Church residents, Vakula will make an exclusive London appearance, bringing his unique soulful yet bassy sound to Vauxhall.
Ever since his first release back in 2008 on Quintessentials, everything Vakula has touched is absolute gold. With releases spanning labels such as Leleka, Firecracker, Shevchenko and Dekmantel, his music only gets better and better. His debut album ‘A voyage to Arcturus’ received critical acclaim, and has gone hand in hand with his consistently impressive DJ sets, playing worldwide week in, week out.
Joining Vakula are Church residents FYI Chris. After entering the scene earlier this year with their sublime debut EP ‘No hurry/Juliette’ they have risen up very quickly and caught the attention of lots of respected artists, with their ability to span genres smoothly and with style.
