Dziga Vertov’s remarkable and game-changing exploration of city life. BFI

Dziga Vertov’s experimental documentary is digitally restored and is back on screens. It was filmed in Moscow and in the Ukrainian cities of Odessa, Kiev and Kharkiv. Vertov intended to use his method kino-oko (cine-eye) to show the “truth”: the beauty of the machinery and hard labour, and the appealing everyday life in the modern socialist city. Truth and objectivity is better viewed in context: “Truth” was also the name of the contemporaneous Soviet newspaper, the major communist propaganda tool.

The film was shot over three years, and produced in Odessa (currently, Ukrainian city) studios in 1929. The original Ukrainian intertitles were sadly lost in the 30-s, when the film was re-cut in Russian.
