Sheffield Doc/Fest presents Screening of Maidan by Sergei Loznitsa

DIRECTOR(S): Sergei Loznitsa
PRODUCER(S): Maria Choustova-Baker
COUNTRY: Ukraine, Netherlands YEAR: 2014 DURATION: 134 min LANGUAGE: Ukrainian FORMAT: dcp

Chronicling the swell and fade of the anti-government protests in Ukraine, Maidan is an unhurried look at the three-month occupation of Kiev’s central square, both as a spectacle as well as a collaborative operation. Following a timeline of events that segments the historic event into three chapters, we find a hopeful prelude, a determined struggle in the middle, and a violent finale. Opting for a first-hand perspective that remains sternly non-intrusive, the film is made up of long, unflinching takes of people as a collective: basking in strength, portioning supplies, singing in unison. Even as optimism waned, the gaze remains focused, as if the eyes were intent on witnessing the snipers and the injured bodies, and on calling out the police violence that resulted in over 100 deaths. Director Sergei Loznitsa (In the Fog, 2012) skilfully captures the emotional complexities of revolutionary work and allows it to unfold before your eyes.
