Organised by:
Santara Šviesa UK Club. Santara –Šviesa is a liberal Lithuanian organization founded after World War II. In 1947, a small group of exiles in Germany founded Šviesa (“The Light”) as a liberal alternative to the more conservative political and cultural organizations that dominated the Lithuanian displaced person community in the refugee camps. After the majority of the émigrés migrated to the United States, theŠviesa group joined with the liberal academic youth faction Santara (“Harmony”) in 1957 to create theSantara-Šviesa Federation. Santara-Šviesa occupied a unique niche within the Lithuanian diaspora as a liberal voice through its annual meetings and the monthly publication Akiračiai (“Horizons”).
After 1990, the organization transferred much of its activity to Lithuania. While small in number and only loosely organized, Santara-Šviesa has had disproportionate influence in politics and the academy: leaders within the movement have included President Valdas Adamkus, prominent historian Egidijus Aleksandravičius and the philosopher Leonidas Donskis.
Since 2009 Santara-Šviesa has its chapter in the United Kingdom – London “Santara-Šviesa” club.
The organization works closely with Lithuanian community in London and with Academic scholars at Oxford, Cambridge University and UCL. London “Santara-Šviesa” club has organized numerous cultural events as well as symposiums and international forums with speakers from Lithuania, USA, Switzerland, Germany and United Kingdom.
