Special guest appearance of Andriy Viytovych – viola soloist of the Royal Opera House
About the musicians:
Andriy Viytovych is a principal viola of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. Born in Krementz, Ukraine, in 1971, Andriy started to play the violin at the age of seven. He studied in a specialist music school in Lviv and later at the Lviv Conservatory under Professor Shutko. In 1991 he won a scholarship to study at the Menuhin Academy in Gstaad, Switzerland, where he was taught by Professors Alberto Lysy and Johannes Eskaer. In 1996 Andriy joined the London Symphony Orchestra as co-principal viola and in 2000 became a principal viola with the Royal Opera House orchestra in Covent Garden. Andriy Viytovych is also a very committed chamber musician. He has worked with Yehudi Menuhin, Howard Shelley, LSO Chamber Players, International Menuhin Music Academy, Covent Garden Soloists and European Camerata. Read more about Andriy here.
Orpheus Papafilippou is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music who awarded him a scholarship to further his solo studies with Carmel Kaine at the Queensland Conservatorium in Australia. His prizes include first prize in the Concerto Competition at the Richmond Music Festival playing the Sibelius Violin Concerto and the Silver Medal at the Marlow Music Festival. As a soloist he has performed in Great Britain, Greece, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Australia, China, Korea and on Cypriot National Television. Georgian choir Borjgali is a mixed group of singers that share a love of singing the ancient and evocative harmony songs from the Republic of Georgia. Founded by director Anthony Johnston in 2004, who first came into contact with Georgian song through a meeting with the male ensemble Mtiebi in 1994, led by the late Edisher Garakanidze. He was struck by the presence and authenticity of the singers and the power of the songs to energize and inspire, and to stir some ancestral memory of a world all but forgotten. From that meeting a seed was sown that has become the choir as it is today. it is the Georgian spirit of celebration, friendship and joy for life that inspires them.
