Concert of Ukrainian and Polish traditional songs will take place in the Polish Cultural Institute (POSK) in Hammersmith. The program will include a screening of a unique documentary about Ukrainian villages and traditional singers in Ukrainian Polissya region (film in Ukrainian, with Polish subtitles), and a concert by Monika Walenko-ili-Tsang of some most beautiful folk songs.
Monika is a member of the East Warsaw ensemble that documents, reconstructs and performs Polish, Ukrainian and Russian traditional folk music. Amongst the repertoire of the group are songs recorded during field trips in Ukrainian Polissya, southern Russia, and in Polish regions of Kurpie, Kujawy and Mazowsze. The members of East Warsaw have been singing folk music since 1999, when they first met, united by their fascination for the ancient musical traditions. Polish, Ukrainian and Russian music archives remain very important sources of information; the most important inspiration however is the contact with local artists – singers of older generations, whom the members of the ensemble have been visiting for many years.
East Warsaw ensemble will give a concert at Pushkin house on 7th January 2016. More information will follow.
