Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov has been on a hunger strike in a Russian penal colony for over 50 days.
On Sunday 8 July, Cambridge Ukrainian Studies is hosting a free screening of a documentary film about Sentsov and his shocking case at the Cambridge Arts Picturehouse: The Trial: The State of Russia vs Oleg Sentsov, directed by Askold Kurov.
From Variety:
The Trial ‘leaves you with a shuddering chill. The central figure, Oleg Sentsov, is a Ukrainian writer and filmmaker known for his 2011 movie Gamer. In Russia, it made him a directorial star, but during the 2014 Crimean crisis he became part of the AutoMaidan movement, devoted to keeping Ukraine — and, specifically, Crimea — independent of Russia. He delivered food and supplies to Ukrainian servicemen, but on May 11, 2014, he was arrested and charged with organizing a terrorist cell, plotting terrorist attacks, and trafficking in illegal arms. He was held indefinitely and is now serving a 20-year prison sentence in Siberia…. Directed and shot by Askold Kurov, a Russian filmmaker as brave as his subject.’
