This lecture will be co-hosted by the Henry Jackson Society and was pre-announced at the BUAid Inaugural Reception in the House of Commons on 2ndNovember 2016 when General Sir Richard Shirreff (former Deputy Commander of NATO Forces in Europe) emphasised the need for the West to shake off its complacency.
The event aims at raising awareness about the scale of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and reaching out to a wider audience in the UK.
British-Ukrainian Aid (BUAid) provides humanitarian and medical aid and promotes programmes on social adaptationto people suffering due to the armed conflict and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, including the injured and wounded, orphaned children, the elderly, internally displaced persons and families who have lost their main earners. General Sir Richard Shirreff KCB CBE
Until March 2014 General Sir Richard Shirreff was Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Now he is an established independent strategic consultant with over 37 years of experience as an international leader and commander with exceptional diplomatic, managerial and political skills. He has risen to the highest rank in the British Army and NATO. Until July 2014 he was a member of NATO’s strategic command group and deputy to NATO’s US strategic commander. As Operation Commander of the EU Operation in Bosnia-Herzogovina redesigned strategy and achieved buy- in from EU Policy Security Committee and EU Foreign Ministers. General Shirreff will discuss candidly the Ukraine crisis and the key decision point that NATO countries face today as a result of Russia’s activities.The speaker will share his views on the policy direction in terms of military and humanitarian involvements.
