More About The Film

The film is based on the story of the disaster and its consequences entirely through an extraordinary archive, shot at great risk in the weeks after the accident by a handful of cameramen given access to the plant. From a ten-year-old schoolboy to a Russian general, the film show details of how the lives of millions of people were transformed and how their memories of that fateful night and the aftermath have haunted them since.
In the aftermath of the disaster, the Soviet Union remained silent, refusing to elaborate on the grim reality of the situation on the ground. The film shows how the cover-up that followed sparked unprecedented distrust in the authorities, hence what lead to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
