Ivanna Maszczak, originally from Ukraine, was an inmate in several Gulag camps in Kolyma, in the far north-east of the Soviet Union. As a young woman Ivanna withstood hunger, forced labour and temperatures which plunged to minus 50 degrees centigrade. Ivanna is now 96 years old. This event is going to be one of the last opportunities to hear from a survivor of the Gulag – someone who was actually there. Giles Udy, author of Labour and the Gulag, will talk about the Gulag system and then Ivanna will answer questions about her personal experiences.
Doors open at 5:30pm for a 6:00pm start.
